I did promise a post now and then, so here you go -
Surprise Finish in the Pop Secret 500 at California Speedway -
Published at 1330 Wednesday September 8, 2004
Another electrifying performance from 43 or so of Nascar's best duking it out at speeds at times in excess of 200 MPH...
This time however the "favored sons" failed to make the grade and for many pundits and fans alike the final Victory Lane result ranged from an unexpected surprise to perplexity: But not, for readers of this journal, where in our last, we boldly predicted: Great days likely lay ahead for Robert Yates Racing Team of UPS and Dale Jarrett and M&M's Elliot Sadler.
To specifically quote from our previous report:
Dale Jarrett finishes 2nd in Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis
"The end result turned out impressive enough for Racing Legend and Owner Robert Yates Racing Team of Dale Jarrett's UPS 88 and 3rd place team-mate Elliot Sadler's M&M 38, proving they have a pair of Fords with great future potential".
Regrettably, Dale Jarrett's 88 suffered debris damage early on in the race and then the worst of all nightmares happened, as he pitted for repairs and somehow a wheel nut was misplaced and he ended up back in 35th place on some penalty.
How can something as rudimentary and elementary happen in such a high-speed, high-tech ultra-professional endeavor?
Stuff happens. Murphy's law it seems, doesn't discriminate - Can happen to the best. So one team member wins, while the other has to suffer a screw-up - Literally. But that's not the end of the story: While being dealt such an unfortunate blow, could mentally crush even the best of us, not DJ it seems: As true to form, he once again clawed his way up the rankings to land in around 8th to 10th place. A formidable accomplishment in of itself and once again tends to prove, had he not suffered the wheel nut carnage, he probably could have been neck and neck with team-mate Elliot for first place.
Why? Since he was into the teens or well up with the fleet before the incident, it stands to reason, that if he could make up 27 places, he'd have had to have been out front, were it not for that darn wheel nut! Let alone after also suffering damage along the way. Almost every race over the past ten or so, you could have written him off as a non-starter, yet he keeps coming back. Seems this DJ is becoming one of the "Dark Horses" of the Nascar Circuit, with his continual efforts of late to come from behind, but mechanical problems, bad luck and now a fortunate steak of destiny, places him amongst the few gunning for and eligible to make the Top Ten, if he can make the grade at Richmond still gives him a shot at the 2004 Nextel Cup... It may be bit of a long shot, but "Never say never."
As we commented before, what makes NASCAR so intriguing is figuring out who's hot and who's not. And believe it, that can change from week to week or even minute by minute... Sometimes NASCAR is a little like NASDAQ: When the winners get too carried away they are sooner or later humbled and often it takes years to work their way back to the top.
A quick Google on "Robert Yates Racing Team" reveals an impressive string of Winston Cup successes from 1989 thru 2002 with 53 wins and Dale Jarrett's 1999 Winston Cup Championship, netting over a staggering $58 Million in revenues.
"No one knows horsepower better than Robert Yates. Starting out as an engine builder, Yates worked his way though the ranks of the NASCAR garage over the past 36 years and found success along the way. As a proud owner of the No. 38 “M&M’s” ® Ford driven by Elliott Sadler and the No. 88 UPS Ford driven by Dale Jarrett, Yates has collected 53 wins since 1989. The most notable success was Dale Jarrett’s Winston or what is now called the Nextel Cup Championship".
So it's equally intriguing that right around their low point of 2002, in November that year the pundits were pounding RYR:
"The Train Wreck At Robert Yates Racing" ...November 4, 2002... By Joe "BumpStop" Foster
Curiously, just as the Nasdaq was somewhat of a "Train Wreck" at that time and struggling to turn around, so was RYR:
Well, train wreck no more, for both... As we commented a while back to the folks at Dale Jarret Racing Adventure DJRT, where you can drive your own authentic NASCAR at 165 MPH... Anymore and you'd probably go airborne, so that's as fast as they'll allow for rookies: 1-888-GO-RACE-1. Anyhow, as we said a while back to them: "These guys are going to win a lot of races sooner or later".
Just as the hallmark of a Tennis, Golfing or any Champion, is that relentless ability to continually come from behind and eventually win the day: That seems to be the emerging trend at Robert Yates Racing.
