I was updating Windows XP on my computer this morning. I admit to being technologically challenged. I do know that there are many computer spyware programs and viruses that try to infect our computers. I have added Norton anti-virus and I do have a firewall installed, but I suspected that this may not be enough.
Before I added the new update from Windows XP there was a recommendation to run a scan for spyware and other pests. I had been using the free version of ad-aware and thought it was doing a good job. My computer had been acting sluggish lately and I thought I may have picked up a parasite of some type but the scans I had been doing didn't pick up anything. The Windows alert recommended Pest Control and had a link. I clicked on it and it offered a free scan. a FREE! scan? I like free! So I scanned my computer and to my astonishment it picked up 91 assorted pests. One was a really nasty piece of spyware which was gumming up my computer by up to 15%. There were 2 hijackers that were steering my browser to sites I had no intention of visiting. The others were various cookie trackers picked up from various sites. I was happy to be able to buy and download the pest control product that got rid of those pests instantly and will warn me anytime they try to attach themselves to my computuer in the future.
As we go through life we often think everything is AOK. We are oblivious that there are pests who are attaching themselves to our soul. It may be attitudes that have been hijacked or maybe our browser (eyes) have been steered towards things we had no intention of looking at. These spiritual pests can also gum up the works of our lives and make us less effective. There is something available to us for Spiritual Pest Control. If we have asked Jesus to be our Savior then we can ask the Holy Spirit to 'scan' for pests. The Bible says He is the searcher who can convict our hearts of sin. We are encouraged to ask God to search our hearts, know our minds and see if there is any wicked way in us. When we have Jesus in our hearts, his Spirit resides in us so we don't need to install him. He is already there. But we do have the responsiblity to ask him to teach us, lead us, guide us and 'scan' us. Sometimes he will convict us of something without us even asking but over time if we become less sensitive to his voice; we may not be able to hear him unless we run the pest control in earnest. If it has been a while since you have scanned your heart, why not ask the Lord today to show you the 'pests' that are attempting to hijack your life? The little foxes that spoil the vines. Whether it is secret sins, or wrong attitudes, unforgiveness or any other problem-the answer is Jesus and his mercy and grace.
If you have not asked Jesus to be you Savior-it is pretty easy to do that. If you believe that Jesus took the punishment for your sins and paid that debt to God for you-then go ahead and tell him that you believe that. Say 'Lord God, I believe that Jesus paid the punishment that I deserved when he died on the cross in my place. I ask him to be my Savior and I choose to turn from the wrong choices I have been making and with your help choose the right. Thank you for hearing me'. Then you can receive Jesus the FREE! gift that God gave us. When we ask him to be our Savior he comes into our hearts and save us. It is by grace that we are saved and not by anything we do. It is a gift of God not works so that no one can boast and say he did it himself. (Ephesians 2:8+9 in a Debi Paraphrase). The words that you say are not a 'magic formula'. It is more important that you make a connection with God and sincerely ask for Jesus to be your Savior. You will know if he has entered into your life because you will be a brand new person in the sense that you will be living in a new dimension of awareness of God. The Bible calls this being born again. Those words may sound scary to some and wacko to others. But it really describes the new person God will make of you. You will still have your personality and be recognizable as you. But you will also have Christ shaping you to be who he created you to be.
